Winitz, a noted antique rug authority, lecturer and author, founded Claremont Rug Company in 1980. He acquires the vast majority of the rugs in his inventory from private collections and estates around the globe. He said, “I actually began building our vast network of sources even before we started Claremont.”

He emphasized, “Rugs that are art-level caliber have stood the test of time and demand for them continues to be extremely solid. The only thing lacking is a ready supply of these Old Masters of the rug world.” For this reason, Winitz recently hired three new members to Claremont's international buying team.

Winitz reported that this year Claremont's buyers have made numerous other small to mid-size acquisitions of art-level rugs, which he says comprise less than 1% of the antique rugs that were ever produced. Yet he stressed that the Illinois and Washington estates are “the first real windfall purchase of 2009, where we accessed a substantial number of deeply memorable rugs that had been off the market for decades.”

The “Grand Carpets from Illinois and Washington Estates” will be available for viewing and purchase, starting at 11 a.m. on April 25 at Claremont Rug Company, 6087 Claremont Avenue, Oakland, CA.
