Establishing institutes at provincial and federal level is an urgent need for making the farmers aware about genetically modified (GM) technology.

Due to insufficient biotechnology utilization there was a large decline in Pakistan's agricultural production, said, Ghulam Rabbani, senior member of Pakistan Yarn Merchants Association (PYMA).

Sustainability and improvement in the crops yield are the major challenges for Pakistan's agriculture sector, in order to deal with the problems like population increase and water scarcity, he added.

Utilization of GM technology is the reason for rapid progress of worldwide agriculture sector. Pakistan's agricultural sector can also attain heights if it is adopts this technology, said Rabbani.

He also said that, in the year 2003, BT cotton hybrid was approved for commercial cultivation in India.
