Parkdale Mills will shut down a plant in Sanford by June 30, leaving 81 people without job. But Sustainable Textile Group plans to open a new facility in Rowan County and intended to generate 223 jobs within next two years.

Closure of the plant in Sanford will impact Lee County, which already has the highest unemployment rates in the state. About 40 percent of the workers here are employed by the manufacturing sector, which has been highly affected by the recession.

Meanwhile, amid the closure of textile companies in recent years, opening of new textile plant in Rowan is something unusual for North Carolina. The Sustainable Textile Group, which manufactures nonwoven materials used in home, medical and automotive applications, has been lured with at least $600,000 in incentives.
