'Technical textiles will be promising in long term' – BMD Pvt. Ltd

All textile experts have concluded that technical textiles are the next big thing that can bring about a thrust to the Indian textile industry. According to a recent study conducted by Technopak, the size of the sub-sector is currently Rs 16 billion and has the potential to grow by 11-12 percent per annum.

These mouth-licking figures prompted a few companies to announce big ticket size investments in this still nascent sector in the last few years. But since the economic crisis has unfolded a few months back, a lot of investments may have been put on hold. We decided to speak to a few companies to learn about the same.

Fibre2fashion first spoke to Mr. R.S. Dugar, Director of BMD Pvt Ltd. BMD is a leading manufacturer of high performance specialized furnishing fabrics for automotives, decorative furnishing fabrics for homes, contract furnishing and flame retardant fabric and supplies seat cover fabrics to leading automobile manufacturers in India.

First we asked him as to far has this promising sub-sector been affected, to which he said, “Long term prospects for technical textiles continue to be promising and then when asked about status of promised investments, he replied by saying, “The current slow down in economies all over the world does impact investment decisions”.

“This happens particularly in a nascent segment, where lot of market development has to happen & policy framework has to fall in place, but I feel, in the short term, the expected investment in technical textiles will slow down and quite a few projects will be deferred until economy outlook picks up in 2010”, he concluded by saying.
