New Union Textiles Minister vows to create 10 mn jobs in sector

Shri Maran said that as a result of specific and targeted initiatives the new Government will successfully tackle the issues of employment generation and maximize the welfare of common stakeholders in the textiles industry such as weavers, cotton farmers, jute farmers, cocoon rearers, shepherds, mill workers, powerloom workers, artisans, traders, designers and exporters.

Earlier on his arrival at the Ministry of Textiles, Shri Maran was received by the Textiles Secretary Smt Rita Menon and senior officials .

In the previous Union Government, Shri Maran was appointed Minister of Communications and IT on 26.5.2004. Shri Maran held that post till 13.5.2007 before resigning from the Cabinet. During his tenure as Communications and IT Minister, Shri Maran took several initiatives for drastically reducing mobile and landline call rates like “One India One Rate” and for bringing in investments in Telecom and IT Sectors.

Born on 5.12.1966, Shri Maran graduated in economics from Loyola College, Chennai. Shri Maran has been re-elected second time as a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate from Central Chennai Constituency in Chennai (Tamil Nadu) in the 15th Lok Sabha.
