The Chairman of the Privatisation Commission, Dr Jalil speaking at a seminar that focused on the roles of the privatized industries, said that the government should support private sector industries and attract investors with good policies.

This he said will help in boosting the growth of the economy and the government should disengage itself from running and managing companies and unless the government does not motivate the businessmen, it will tough for the country to move forward.

Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue, Dr Moazzem advised handing over of sick state-owned companies to the private sector since the public sector due to bureaucratic tangles, pushes the industries deeper into a crisis.

Delving out statistics on the jute sector he said, the jute sector currently accounts for 3.9 percent of total exports, which was 89.9 percent in 1973 and currently 129 jute mills are in operation, of which 18 mills operate under the public sector.

He suggested improving productivity of the jute mills, reducing cost of production, increasing consumer usage of jute goods, reviewing the jute policy, forming an independent Jute Board and searching for new markets for jute products.
