Some of the UK's leading retail bosses will consider how best to deal with the recession and how to plan for the recovery at the British Retail Consortium's (BRC's) Annual Retail Conference (Thursday).

Sir Terry Leahy, Tesco's Chief Executive, will deliver the first major speech at the conference. Ian Cheshire, Kingfisher's Chief Executive, and Paul Foley, Aldi UK's Group Managing Director, are among the other high-profile speakers at the BRC event, which is sponsored by MasterCard Europe.

An audience of 300 delegates will discuss topics including how to understand customers, deliver value and manage employees effectively during the recession as well as planning the route to recovery.

This year's BRC Conference is on Thursday 11 June at the Grange St. Paul's Hotel, London.

At the conference Sir Terry Leahy, Tesco's Chief Executive, is expected to say: "Businesses of all sizes are grappling with the toughest trading conditions seen for some time. We all face the same challenge: what should we do to survive and prosper? The answer is a simple one. Now more than ever we must be the consumer's champion for it is consumers who drive businesses and economies forward.

"In hard times consumers want proof that businesses are battling for them. That doesn't mean simply cutting prices - it means delivering value. Retailers who do their best to help consumers will be rewarded with loyalty, not just today but when recovery comes. It won't be easy, it will be hard work and it will demand change. But our industry has survived recessions before and we will survive this one too."

Stephen Robertson, BRC Director General, said: “We have an outstanding line-up of the UK's top retail bosses speaking at the BRC's Annual Retail Conference. It will be fascinating to hear how leading retailers from all parts of the High Street are steering their businesses through these tough trading conditions and how they plan to adjust when the recovery starts. This is an excellent opportunity to learn from some of the UK's most successful companies.”

Hany Fam, General Manager, UK & Ireland Markets, MasterCard, said: "I'm delighted to be addressing the BRC Annual Conference this year. In this challenging economic climate, it's crucial to understand how businesses and consumers are behaving so that we can respond and prepare ourselves for the road ahead. This event is an excellent opportunity to exchange views and discuss strategies for navigating our way out of the downturn."
