NITRA organises seminar on flame retardant & protective textiles

He also called upon the industry to become more pro-active to augment govt. initiatives by providing timely feedback and sharing their own findings. He informed that though major textile users amongst govt. agencies like defense ministry, para-military forces, home ministry and agriculture ministry is gradually resorting to technical textiles products, yet a lot remains to be done to create awareness and increase demand for technical textiles products in non-govt., industrial and consumer markets.

Before the technical session got underway, Prof. Dr. V. K. Kothari of IIT-D stressed on educating the users for accepting protective textiles while proposing the formal vote of thanks. After the inaugural session, the technical session got underway. Following papers were presented by various industry professionals:

1. Development of Fire Reterdant Textiles – Role of Standards: J. K. Gupta, Bureau of Indian Standards
2. Personal Protective Textiles & International Standards: Pawan Sharma, Jaya Shree Textiles
3. Standards/Test Procedures/Norms for flame retarder for home textiles: Rajeev Jha, Rossari Biotech India Pvt. Ltd.
4. The Flamability of Fabric: Rajesh Tendulkar, Clariant Chemicals (I) Ltd.
5. Developments in flame retardant finishing of cellulosic textiles and its blends: Dr. B.S.Butola, IIT, Delhi.
6. Let us review EN 471 Colour Control of High Visibility Protective Clothing with reference EN471 Euro norm: Manish Kapadia, Jay Instruments & Systems Pvt Ltd.
7. NITRA-IIT,D?s Contribution to Protech: Dr. J. V. Rao, NITRA & Prof. Dr. V. K. Kothari, IIT-D

After the presentations the house was opened for discussion. Participants exchanged their views, shared opinions and offered suggestions that were well taken. Dr. V. K. Kothari, senior Professor, Dept. of Textile Technology, IIT- Delhi summed up the proceedings and concluded the seminar. Many participants have requested to conduct awareness programs on other categories of protective textiles such as protection against extreme climate, bullet proof clothing, and protection against NBC.

Importance of fire Retardant Textiles - Role of Standards:
The speaker from Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) has discussed various prevailing Indian standards on flame retardant textiles. He also explained various terminologies used in reporting results of flame retardant textiles. Information on new BIS standards was also discussed.

The Flammability of fabric-
This paper was presented by M/S Clariant chemicals (India) Ltd. In this papers speaker has discussed about various types of national and International flammability tests. He also discussed behaviour of various fibres with flame and demonstrated through a video film how the fire propagates. Finally he has suggested various finishing chemicals to achieve required flammability behaviour.
