To set up a textile hub in the metro, Nelson Mandela bay will sign a partnership agreement with the National Development Agency (NDA) and Old Mutual, informed the Economic Development Executive Director, Mr. Zolile Siswana. Its focus will be on the market for schools which includes jerseys and uniforms.

The community-public-private-partnership project received the approval of the portfolio committee while the approval from the full council is still awaited. The Department Economic Development and Environmental Affairs has allocated R3.2 million and the NDA has allocated R1.9 million for the project.

Mr. Siswana said that a delegation of all stakeholders will visit India to study how the country had established its textile hubs. This delegation would be led by the Mayor, Mr. Nondumiso Maphazi.

Serving affordable and quality textile products to the customer as well as providing sustainable income on a wider scale to currently unemployed people, especially in the face of declining job and income-generating opportunities is the major aim of the proposed project.
