Exports of textile & clothing from Guangdong begin to pick up

The export bases of China's textiles and garment sector are mainly concentrated in eastern coastal areas like Zhejiang, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shandong and Shanghai and rank among the top five exporters in China and also accounting for about 70 percent of national exports.
According to data of the first four months, China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles, textile and garment exports reached US $46.56 billion, down 10 percent year-on-year, of which, exports from Guangdong fell 7.2 percent while shipments from Shanghai fell 8.5 percent.
Exports from Zhejiang fell 9.4 percent, that from Shandong fell 10.1 percent and from Jiangsu fell 11.4 percent. In comparison, the smallest export decline appeared in Guangdong. As a major textile province, Guangdong has a large number of foreign-funded enterprises in textile and garment processing trade.
They are sensitive to international market and as early as the first half of last year, Guangdang's exports took the lead by declining under impact of subprime loan crisis in the United States. It is only from this year that decline in exports from Guangdong has been arrested and narrowed.
Guangdong's textile industry has obviously a distinct advantage, since foreign investments are active and its industrial clusters have gradually formed. Guangdong has a good industrial base, but the textile industry is relatively weak in innovation and branding activities.
Experts say that Guangdong should seize the opportunity to achieve more structural adjustment in accordance with its own characteristics and the main direction of the textile and garment industry in Guangdong is to improve its industrial chain by increasing efforts in deep processing and brand building.
