Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) has made it clear that it stands by the time frame of phasing out the practice of mulesing sheep for its wool by the end of next year.
Earlier in 2008, the animal rights group PETA and a few European apparel retailers had raised objections over the practice of mulesing and the wool sector had agreed to phase it out by 2010.
Now with European retailers putting pressure on their Chinese suppliers to supply clothing with un-mulesed wool, it has become all the more important that the sector stick to its deadline, since China is the biggest purchaser of Australian wool.
