On June 25th, 2009 the Bremen Cotton Exchange held its 135th General Assembly in its 137th fiscal year under the chairmanship of President Wolfgang Vogt-Jordan. The key note speaker was Lutz Peper, President of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce.

The members adopted the rendering of accounts and the board's report of the activities in the financial year 2008 and formally approved the Board of Directors and the Management. The print version of the annual report depicts the activities of the Bremen Cotton Exchange and the Fibre Institute Bremen as well as an analysis of the global cotton situation.

The report includes surveys on world production, consumption and trade, statistical data and numerous charts. Further the cotton situation in Germany, Austria and Switzerland is described in detail. Specials refer to the cotton situation in Indonesia and farmer suicides in India, often falsely brought in connection with cotton farming. The written report is available for the membership free of charge.

The President reported on the activities of the Bremen Cotton Exchange at home and abroad: The highlight of 2008 was the 29th International Cotton Conference from April 2nd -5th visited by more than 600 participants from 43 countries.

Also a success was the licensing of the International Cotton Emblem. In 2008, 13 further licences were granted and in October 2008 the 100th licensee could be welcomed. Besides Germany licensees are located in Italy, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

The Gdynia Cotton Association (GCA) had granted three further licences in 2008. From the beginning of licensing in autumn 2006 the license for the International Cotton Emblem was granted to 110 single firms directly or through their affiliated
groups. The trademark stands for pure cotton products.

The pollutant analyses which have been regularly published by the exchange since 1991, were also continued in September 2008 with 16 samples of raw cotton from the 2008/09 crop season. For the first time samples from China and Pakistan were included. The tests according to Eco-Tex 100 Standard were carried out by the Hohenstein Research Institute. Also the latest tests confirmed that the samples tested were completely pollutant free.

The current cotton research project of the Fibre Institute Bremen FIBRE is the so called CSITC project (Commercial Standardization of Instrument Testing of Cotton) on the harmonisation of instrument testing. FIBRE is prosecuting agency together with the USDA. The project is sponsored by EU and Common Fund for Commodities (CFC). The first seminar took place from 10 - 23 February 2008 in Bremen with cotton experts from Burkina Faso and Tanzania.

Two applications by the Board of Directors were presented to the General Assembly. The first was the application for amendment of the By-Laws of the Bremen Cotton Exchange (cf. Cotton Report No. 17/18 of 8 May 2009). The Board of Directors applied for the deletion of article 19, section 2 of the By-Laws as the “Bremer Verein der Baumwollhändler” has decided it's liquidation at its last general meeting. The application was unanimously approved.
