Production of cotton estimated at 30.9 million bales – SICA

It has been estimated by the South India Cotton Association (SICA) that during the season 2009-10, the cotton production in India will touch 30.9 million bales (1 bale=175 kg).

In the cotton crop report for the week ended July 4, SICA said that the production in the central region would be 17.6 million bales, in Northern region it would be 4.35 million bales.

In Southern region, 7.55 million bales and other smaller production centre's would account for 200,000 bales, along with 1.2 million bales loose consumption, which is not accounted in state-wise production.

In the state-wise list of cotton production, Gujarat is estimated to enjoy the first position with a production of 9 million bales, followed by Maharashtra 6.8 million bales and Andhra Pradesh 5.8 million bales, revealed the SICA secretary Mr. K.N. Vishwanathan.

The production of other states, such as Punjab would be 1.95 million bales, Haryana 1.5 million bales and that of Rajasthan 900,000 bales while the output of Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu would be 1.8 million, 1.2 million and 550,000 bales respectively, informed SICA.
