Nodal agencies procure 44% of overall cotton arrival

In the season 2008-09, the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) and the cooperative major Nafed have purchased 12.707 million bales of cotton fiber, which is about 44 percent of country's overall arrival totaling to 28.420 million bales.
The cotton production for 2008-09 seasons is pegged at 29 million bales. The Cotton season runs from October to September and one bale is equivalent to 170 kg.
Both the nodal agencies for procurement of cotton i.e. CCI and Nafed have purchased 8.935 million bales and 3.77 million bales respectively at the minimum support price.
The CCI has purchased cotton in nine states, while Nafed was able to procure it in states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. In this procurement, the maximum cotton has been bought from Andhra Pradesh.
The amount of cotton bales that CCI has bought from Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat is 3.27 million, 1.97 million and 1.23 million respectively.
