All the way from Germany to north Yorkshire to learn to shear sheep – and it was a trip that could change the life of Angelika Jeske.

She flew over from Cologne last weekend to take part in a British Wool Marketing Board two-day sheep shearing training course held at Blubberhouses, near Otley as part of her plan to make a major life-style change and move to Australia to work on a sheep station in New South Wales.

“There were no shearing courses available in Germany. I'd heard that the British Wool Marketing Board held courses in the UK and that the standard of training was very high. I have to learn as many basic sheep skills as quickly as possible,” said Angelika.

She first went to Australia for a holiday 13 years ago and
“fell head over heels” with the country. But she had to return to Germany and has been working for a large company manufacturing industrial electric cables and equipment.

But just a few months ago she returned to Australia for another
holiday and the visit rekindled her love for the country.

“I stayed on a sheep farm and decided that this is what I want to do. I have been offered a job on the farm but I'm now learning as many sheep management skills as I can before I go back.”

The British Wool Marketing Board's two-day shearing training course was held at the farm of Nick Houseman, (Chairman of the BWMB's English Northern Regional Committee) at Blubberhouses near Otley.

“The sheep shearing training courses have been a big success this year and we had about 20 on this one with some people travelling a long way to attend – but we've never had anyone from as far away as Germany before,” said Nick.

Richard Schofield from Tosside near Settle was the senior British Wool Marketing Board instructor running the course and said the reputation of the Wool Board's shearing training is clearly spreading outside the UK.

“It's a long way to travel for a sheep shearing course but our training skills are available to anyone no matter where they come from. Angelika showed natural skills in the way she handled and sheared the sheep and was very proficient by the end of the two day course.

“I'd say she will have a very successful new career working with sheep in Australia.”
