The island of Mauritius, located off the eastern coast of the African continent has a considerable textile and apparel manufacturing industry, but the global economic crisis has brought its share of depression in the sector.

But the sector in the country not to be put down has taken cues from another island country; Sri Lanka and has decided to take the eco-friendly route in manufacturing of garments and use its abundance of natural resources.

The country has been blessed with plentiful of sunshine, rain and wind and a few companies have made a beginning by taking advantage of these factors to deliver eco-friendly clothing to their high-end European buyers.

Companies are installing solar panels to generate electricity; a few others are harvesting rain water for future consumption, while wind energy is used for better ventilation of factories, which all together, help reduce electric consumption.

They also help directly in the principle of sustainable development and environmental concerns, by becoming more energy-efficient in using more renewable energy sources, using less water and achieving the lowest carbon emission per garment.

This new initiative is also in sync with the new paradigm shift of European consumers towards environmentally safe products, which is also expected to help these companies combat the impact of the economic crisis.

Also in the pipe line are other initiatives like water treatment, waste disposal and recovery, transporting hazardous material and many other factors which go in to making a garment environmentally friendly.
