The Chairman of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), Mr Clement Chen, said assuming the HKPC chairmanship at this critical moment is an honour yet he never underestimates the responsibilities ahead, in particular, supporting industry to upgrade and transform amid the current economic challenges.

Chairing his first Council meeting (21 July 2009), Mr Chen said, “Local manufacturers understand that to upgrade and transform to high value production is the key to business survival. Leading HKPC in providing timely support to enterprises is thus all the more important at present. In addition to providing a full spectrum of services to assist industry, in particular SMEs, to enhance their competitiveness, HKPC is also en route to help them tap business opportunities accompanying the Government's drive to develop the new economic areas for Hong Kong.”

“While the Cleaner Production Partnership Programme is gathering momentum with increasing participation from Hong Kong-owned factories in the PRD, HKPC is seeking support from the Government to further gear up our flagship programme – 'TURN', to assist industry to upgrade and transform through various improvement projects. We have also enhanced our services in the PRD in areas of advanced technologies, creative industries, branding and domestic sales,” he said.

Looking ahead, Mr Chen will continue to build on HKPC's strong network to foster strategic partnership with industry. He said, “The newly established consultation platform, Hong Kong Industry Network Clusters (HK-INC), actively gauges the development needs of industry through regular theme-based meetings.

Following the inaugural meeting held last month on the strategy of domestic sales in the Mainland, the next meeting focusing on environmental issues is in the pipeline. On the technology front, we would continue to step up efforts in commercializing the R&D results of industry to benefit the community at large. It was agreed at the Council meeting today to promote a wider adoption of LED green lighting technology.”

In striving to bring new contributions to industry, Mr Chen said, “With its professional team, I am confident that HKPC is poised to fulfil its mission in serving the needs of industry, enhancing the value of its products and services, and boosting the international competitiveness of Hong Kong.”
