WPI for clothing & footwear sector falls in June

According to the most recent figures released by Statistics Netherlands, the Dutch inflation rate was 1.4 percent in June 2009, i.e. 0.2 percentage points lower than in May. Prices of clothes had a downward effect on inflation.

According to the Statistics Sweden, consumer price index increased by 0.2% from May to June (0.5 percent in June 2008). The CPI for June 2009 is 300.17 (1980=100).

Lower prices on clothing (-4.8%) pushed it downwards by 0.3 percentage points.

Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic (SR) said that in June compared with May, consumer prices increased in total by 0.5 %.

- Transport by 1.5 %,
- Clothing and footwear by 0.1 %
- Prices of furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance decreased by 0.2 %.

A rise in prices of clothing and footwear was affected by higher prices of clothing by 0.1 %. Prices of footwear were unchanged.

A decrease in prices of the category of furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance was affected by lower prices of furnishings, carpets and other floor covering by 0.8 %. Prices of household textile increased by 0.7 %.

Central Statistics Office Ireland said prices fell by 5.4% in the year to June. The most significant monthly price changes were decreases in Clothing & Footwear (-2.6%).

Clothing & Footwear prices decreased by 2.6% in the month and by 12.2% in the year to June 2009. This compares to a decrease of 3.1% for the year to June 2008. In the month, clothing prices decreased by 2.6%, while footwear prices decreased by 2.4%. In the month, price decreases were recorded for garments (-2.8%), shoes & other footwear (-2.5%), dress hire & repair of clothing (-0.4%), dry cleaning & laundry (-0.1%) and other articles of clothing (-0.1%).

In the month, price decreases were recorded for non-durable household goods (-0.6%), major tools & equipment (-0.5%), household textiles (-0.3%).

Price increases were recorded for carpets & other floor coverings (+0.7%).

The decrease of the prices of clothing and footwear as well as price increase of fuel had a major impact on consumer price changes in June in Latvia according to Latvijas Statistika. In June, price decrease was recorded also for furniture and furnishings.

Statistics Lithuania informs that in June 2009, against May, prices for consumer goods and services went down by 0.3 per cent. It was the third month in a row this year when negative inflation was recorded.

In the group of clothing and footwear, due to discounts, a 3.6 per cent price drop was observed for footwear, 1.4 per cent for clothing.

Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia informs that in contrast to last year, in June this year consumer prices grew slightly less. Due to pre-season discounts, in the group clothing and footwear the prices of footwear decreased by 3.6% and the prices of clothing by 0.3%

National Statistics Institute of Spain informs that in June, the monthly change of the overall CPI was 0.4%. Clothing and footwear - with a change of –0.8%, which contributed –0.069 to the overall CPI. This change was due to the performance of prices prior to the beginning of the sales period.
