In the first half of 2009, the operation of China's chemical fiber industry clearly improved from the second half of the previous year. Prices of most products rose significantly after mid-March.

Economic efficiency and operating capacity of the industry continued to decline year-on-year, but the drop narrowed from January to February and industry-wide profits realized 2.67 billion Yuan in the same period.

From January to May, chemical fiber output reached 10.41 million tons, an increase of 7.83 percent over the same period last year, even surpassing the growth rate of 7.4 percent achieved last year.

Among them, polyester production marked 8.34 million tons, an increase of 9.13 percent year-on-year; nylon production fetched 480,500 tons, an increase of 9.62 percent; Acrylic output realized a growth of 7.81 percent and viscose fiber rose 7.33 percent.

From January to May, chemical fiber imports registered 330,000 tons, down 12.88 percent year-on-year; chemical fiber exports reached 527,000 tons, down 29.99 percent. The drops in imports and exports though have narrowed month to month.

In the first five months of 2009, the chemical fiber industry achieved an industrial output value of 142 billion Yuan, but down 11.55 percent year-on-year.
