Govt to procure school uniforms from domestic sources

The government of Ghana has declared that provisions for school uniforms should solely be made from fabrics manufactured in Ghana itself.

This was declared by the Vice-President, Mr Mahama after meeting stake holders from the textile industry and members of a trade industry body.

The government order is for around 1,670,000 school uniforms and are estimated to cost around GH¢ 11.7 million and are to be distributed in schools by September.

While the education ministry has budgeted GH¢ 11.7 million for the uniforms, a local company has quoted GH¢ 21.8 million for the same.

The Vice-President has asked the Ministry to request the Finance Ministry to waive of taxes on the fabrics meant for the uniforms to maker them cheaper.

The Vice-President had intervened due to the stalemate between the Education Ministry and the textile sector over quoting competitive prices.

Stakeholders in the textile sector have welcomed the intervention by the VP and said that it was a step in the right direction and would help the sector.

The Ghanaian textile sector which used to employ around 25,000 till a few years back is down to just 4,000 workers now alleged a trade union leader.
