Textile Minister to press FM to fund effluent plants in Tamil Nadu

The Textile Minister, Mr Dayanidhi Maran and the Minister of State for Environments Mr Jairam Ramesh are expected to meet the Finance Minister to seek central assistance for the Rs 8 billion effluent treatment plant and discharge schemes for the textile units in Tamil Nadu.
Earlier, Mr Maran had met the Environment Minister along with a delegation of textile processors to discuss the contentious problem of effluent discharge faced by the textile processing sectors in the textile clusters of Tirupur, Erode and Karur.
The earlier Tamil Nadu government had given an undertaking to the Supreme Court to ensure zero percent discharge of polluted waters in to the environment. But, since the effluent plants project entails an expenditure of Rs 8 billion, the state has not been able to implement the same.
The Tirupur Dyers Association, anticipating financial aid from state and central governments, have started building 20 Central Effluent Treatment Plants (CEPTs) at a cost of Rs 8 billion, with funds borrowed from the banks.
The construction of the CEPTs is almost over and the plants would start functioning soon. But unless the state and central governments fund the projects it would be impossible for the association to repay even the interest.
