Limit volumes to avoid anti-dumping measures – Expert

In the last 13 years and towards the end of July 2009, Vietnam in total faced around 39 anti-dumping litigations, of which it lost in nearly 70 percent of all cases, according to a study by a Professor, Dr Vo Thanh Thu.

These startling facts were released by the professor at a recent workshop organised to discuss anti-dumping regulations imposed by the European Union and the United States.

According to Thu, the main products which were subjected to anti-dumping measures included clothing, textiles, chemicals, sea food, and footwear products.

According to her, the countries which were mainly the targets of anti-dumping lawsuits were also most likely to file the same against products of different countries, but she averred that Vietnamese enterprises had avoided raising anti-dumping issues.

In fact, many goods, which attracted anti-dumping lawsuits were not Vietnam-made products, but China-made goods, brought to Vietnam in order to avoid high tax, or were processed a little in Vietnam before they were shipped to overseas countries.

According to the professor, the government should not get involved in these anti-dumping law suits but let the involved companies to handle it on their own with help from their respective trade associations.

Her advice to avoid anti-dumping measures was to regulate the volume of exports to individual countries, so that those volumes did not attract the attention of the local producers.
