The Union Minister of Textiles, Mr Dayanidhi Maran urged the textile manufacturers to venture in to production of technical textiles since they had huge potential and demand for the same was growing with each passing day.
He was addressing the audience at the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Southern India Mills Association (SIMA). He said that the country produced only 4 percent of its needs while the rest needed to be imported.
This he said was an opportunity for technical textile manufacturers to seize and also export a portion of their output and added by saying that he had asked the state owned National Textiles Corp to explore setting up of a technical textiles plant.
He said he would also address the need to have a cotton godown of the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) in Coimbatore since it proved to be costly for the mills to source cotton from North India.
