The Bangladesh Government is contemplating reopening of three closed jute mills, said the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on jute and textiles, Mr Akhteruzzaman Chowdhury.

The three closed mills are Kowmi Jute Mills in Sirajganj, Doulatpur Jute Mills in Khulna and Adamjee Jute Mills -2 in Narayanganj.

Mr Chowdhury said that, "The present government is working hard to restore the past glory of the golden fibre of Bangladesh and its contribution to the national economy and the Prime Minister herself had given personal attention to the development of the jute sector and bringing back its glory as 'golden fibre”.

The Committee Chairman lamented that the jute mills in the neighbouring countries were operating on Bangladeshi raw jute, while the domestic ones were going bust.

He also informed that the country had harvested a bumper crop in this year and crossed the previous record and added by saying that farmers were receiving remunerative prices for their produce.
