Sanlam's title sponsorship of the SA Fashion Week, has been named as a finalist in the Strategic Sponsorship category of the 2009 Business Art South Africa (BASA) awards. The other finalists in this category are Old Mutual for Encounters, Oppikoppi Productions and Sandton Business Improvement District for the Sandton Central Arts Programme.
Currently in their 13th year running, the annual BASA awards, in collaboration with Business Day and supported by Anglo American, recognize corporate support given to art and culture across a broad spectrum of 11 categories such as International sponsorship, Mentor of the year, Media Sponsorship and First time sponsor. Each category consists of three finalists each. The winners will be announced on the 31st of August.

The 2009 judging panel comprises Ferial Haffajee, editor of City Press, Laurice Taitz, publishing and media consultant, Jenny Crwys-Williams, literary critic and 702 talk show host, Kassie Naidoo, creative director at advertising agency, King James RSVP JHB and fashion commentator and trends analyst, Dion Chang (convener).
The winners will be announced during the Sanlam SA Fashion Week Winter 10/11 Collections to be held at the Sandton Convention Centre from 16th – 19th September. Each category winner receives a prize to the value of R25 000 each, which will be applied for a trip to an international fashion event or trade fair during 2010. The Sanlam SA Fashion Journalism Awards supplements the company's highly successful Award for Excellence in Financial Journalism which is now in its 35th year as well as the Awards for Community Press, now in its 17th year.
Tropika@Play Collection launches at SSAFW Instant Fashion exploded on the runway at Sanlam SA Fashion Week in 2008. After facing off against seven of South Africa's top young designers in knock-out rounds of rapid design, Strangelove took first prize ultimately becoming the designers for Tropika@Play. This year sees the launch of the Tropika@Play Collection, which will be shown on the Centre Runway at the Sanlam SA Fashion Week Exhibition.
