According to Mr Amitav Chakraborty, Director General (DG) of the WTO Cell in the Commerce Ministry, Bangladesh would negotiate to get its major export products included in the duty-free and quota-free categories at the Seventh Ministerial Conference in Geneva.

In the conference held in Hong Kong in 2005, the developed countries had offered the least developed countries (LDC), duty free access for 97 products, irrespective of the fact that most of the countries did not produce these products.

Mr Chakraborty said that, Bangladesh would try to get its major exported products like textiles, apparels, jute, seafood etc, included in the list of items under duty free status at the conference, which is expected to begin from November 30 and will run up to December 2.

He added by saying that, Bangladesh would strongly back the MODE-4 discussion at the summit, which permits free movement of persons within countries and for sending human resources to developed countries from the least developed countries.
