The Economic Minister, Mr Ebrahim Patel, looks like, will not intervene, if 60,000 textile workers plan to go on strike, in spite of the fact that his ministry has allocated millions of Rands as rescue packages for the textile and garment sector.
Last week, Mr Patel had sent a note of warning to the textile and apparel sector employers to not seek a generalised drop in wages, as the purchasing power of the workers would be reduced, which would directly affect the economy.
He also refused to comment on the looming strike scenario and referred to the Ministry of Labour for more information, when asked by journalists. Mr Patel oversaw allocation of a revival package which would help modernise textile machinery.
