The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Textile Management in Coimbatore will be upgraded and renamed as Indian School of Textiles, announced the Textiles Minister Mr. Dayanidhi Maran saying that the school will undertake research and comprehensive consultancy services for the industry.

However, he didn't give any information regarding the completion of up-gradation process and commencement of the institute.

In a bid to capture international markets and meet global environmental standards, the government is also planning to build capacities for environment and social compliance. All these come under the Ministry's agenda for the next 265 days, informed the Minister.

He further said that after the accomplishment of 100 days' agenda, the ministry has a huge task cut-out to maximize productivity and welfare of stakeholders as well as to deal with the factors affecting the growth of textiles industry.

The Ministry will also undertake research and development related activities for textile sector such as developing better handloom products to provide a 'common technology platform' on commercial basis to promote new technologies in order to achieve value addition and product diversification.

Sustained efforts could facilitate the sector to earn an additional $1.5 billion of foreign exchange from the US market, said Mr. Maran.
