Vietnam is estimated to have shipped $2.77 billion worth of footwear products in the eight months of this year, down 11% against the same period last year, the General Statistics Office(GSO) said August 25.

In August, the country's footwear exports are estimated at $350 million, down 3.31% against July and 10.71% compared to the same period last year.

The Leather and Footwear Association (Lefaso) forecast that this year's export turnover of leather and footwear products would reach $4.59 billion, approx the figure of last year and lower 10% than the full-year target of $5.1 billion.

The reduction is attributed to impacts from the global economic crisis. Besides, the EU's term-end check on the anti-dumping suit against Vietnam's leather cap shoes and the European Commission's decision to exclude Vietnamese leather shoe exports to the EU from the list of products eligible for the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) from January 2009 have limited the competitiveness of Vietnamese footwear products.

In 2010, the footwear sector projects its export turnover would reach $5.3 billion as the world's economy starts recovering.
