Creations made by Vikram Singh, a final year post graduate student of “Apparel Design and Merchandising” at National Institute of Design (NID) have been selected for the 21st Montana World of Wearable Art (WOW) Awards in Wellington, New Zealand.

Vikram Singh's garment aptly called 'Joinery'; is one of the 165 clothing selected from across the world and is also amongst ten others from India. He has designed it out of hand painted rubber sheets, which give the illusion that it is actually made from wood.

The Montana WOW Awards Show challenges and exhorts worldwide designers to create unconventional and original designs from traditional or non-traditional raw materials and provides a platform to showcase their creativity on a global platform.

Speaking to Fibre2fashion, Singh said, “I never thought that my garment would be selected till the final round, that too in Montana World of Wearable Art (WOW) Awards in Wellington, New Zealand. It was all due my hard work of almost 22 days”.

When asked about the inspiration behind the creation, he replied by saying, “A few weeks back, I had gone on a trip to Udaipur in Rajasthan, where I saw some old palaces and antique buildings having huge doors, which inspired me to design this garment”.

Giving out details, he said, “These doors become more interesting as they age and the rusted rivets and hinges and the wood getting worn out are all part of its beauty. The materials used for this garment, which has a circumference of 5 feet are plastic foam and rivets”.

“There will be one basic garment on the body, upon which the plastic foam will be stuck together in a way, in which they are found in old doors and then it is spray painted to make it appear and give it an effect of wood”.
