The Textiles and Handlooms Commissioner, Ms. Arti Ahuja said that the Department of Textiles and Handloom has started taking steps to register traditional designs under the Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.

The well-known traditional textiles, crafts and designs of Sambalpuri tie and dye, Nuapatna tie and dye, Nuapatna `Khandua' designs, `Bomkai', Sambalpuri `Pasapalli' design, Kalahandi `Habaspuri', Berhampur `Kumbha' design and silk sarees and Banki Dhalapathar temple design fabrics would soon be patented under this act.

A field survey on these textile art and designs has already been conducted by a team of experts on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) headed by Prof. S. Tripathy. This team is also imparting training and conducting sensitization programs for weavers and artisans in various parts of the state to educate them on IPR and to preserve their ancestral craft.

All the award winning weavers, master weavers and stakeholders are receiving training on geographical indication, copyrights and design patent. There are around 250 textile designs and craft in Orissa, which would be patented gradually, informed Ms. Ahuja. Kotpad Dye and Orissan Ikat have already been patented in the year 2006-07.
