The Chief Minister of Punjab, which is also one of the biggest cotton producing states in India, has requested in a letter to the Minister of Textiles to announce the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of cotton for the new season.

The marketing season for cotton normally starts from October 1 and the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for different grades of cotton is fixed by the Textile Commissioner, which has not been notified so far, said Mr Badal, the Chief Minister.

He has sought the Textile Minister's personal intervention to immediately issue notification relating to MSP for different grades of cotton and also requested him to issue directions to the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) to begin purchase at all the 40 centres.

In the absence of the MSP, Mr Badal said that, the farmers were making a distress sale at much lower prices. Till date 70,000 bales of cotton have arrived in the markets of Punjab and were being sold at Rs 2,550-Rs 2,775 a quintal.
