Mera Houchongba Fair-2009, a week long fair opened in Imphal on September 29, by Secretary of Commerce and Industries and CADA, Mr. Nobert Dishinang and will continue till October 5. The fair is organized by the Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicraft Artisans Co-operative Society, and sponsored by the state department of Commerce and Industries.

Manipur has enough potential in the field of handloom and handicraft. It can generate much of revenue through the sales of its handloom and handicraft products outside the state, by increasing the market area. If the interested entrepreneurs come out to export state products, the Department of Commerce and Industries will extend all help to them, assured Mr. Dishinang.

A number of imported products from the places outside the state, specifically products imported from Myanmar through Moreh dominate the state's handicraft and handloom products. To compete with the imported items there is a need, to create new designs in order to make the products attractive, and also to find novel marketing policies to expand products' market, said Mr. Dishinang.

Reviving the Mera Houchongba festival, a festival related to the brotherhood of people of hills and valley, is the key objective of the fair that encompasses 61 stalls mostly showcasing handloom and handicraft products.
