Cotton accounts for big chunk of agro-exports

Cotton is the number one agricultural product of the country that brings in the highest amount of foreign currency, and constitutes around 20 to 30 percent of country's total agricultural exports. Area under cotton plantation has been increased during past ten years.
Cotton production of the country for the current year has been estimated to go beyond 670,000 tons, recording an 8 percent increase compared to 2008 when the overall cotton production was around 697,841 tons.
In the year 2008, about 176,449 hectares of land was used for cotton production, with 56,141 hectares in the Hasaka governorate, 48,839 hectares in Raqqa, and 30,208 hectares in Deir Ezzor, revealed the statistics.
Syria had been recognized as the pioneering country in cotton production and biological pest control in the second meeting of the Projects Committee on Cotton organized by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in Turkey.
The country, has taken considerable steps in the direction of utilizing safe and low-cost biological pest control in cotton farming and stands second across the world in terms of yield, while it ranks third in the production of organic cotton in Asia, after China and Turkey.
Syria is also considered at par with other countries like the US, China, Pakistan and Turkey in production of coloured cotton.
Textile industries in Syria contribute to around 30 percent of the industrial output and offer employment to nearly 1 million workers of the country, which is about 20 percent of country's total working force.
There are around 27 textile state owned factories, whereas in the private sector, there are more than 11,000 factories and workshops. Textile exports from the country accounts for around 2% of global textile trade and yarn export makes up for about 70 percent of country's overall textile exports.
