Handicraft exports tumble down

As per the Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal (FHAN), Nepali handicraft exports plunged down by 9.01 percent to Rs 270.45 million in the first month of the current fiscal compared to Rs 297.2 million worth of handicrafts exported during the corresponding period of last year.
During this declining trend of handicraft exports, silver jewelry saw an increase of 90.89 percent and comprised 17.36 percent of total handicraft export during the said period. In the first month of this fiscal, silver jewelry exports stood at Rs. 46.9 million against last year's exports of Rs. 24.6 millions.
In addition to this, few more products have witnessed export improvement such as the export of felt products that accounted for 11.8 percent of total handicraft exports and also increased by 20.64 percent to touch Rs. 31.9 million as well as the export of metal products that made up about 9.22 percent of total handicraft exports went up to Rs. 24.9 million.
Plastic goods, hemp goods, glass products, ceramic products and incense are the other products, which experienced export growth.
Pashmina and woolen products are the largest export products, which made up around 21.44 percent and 20.01 percent of total handicraft products respectively. But both the products experienced an export fall; pashmina products fell from Rs 77.8 million to Rs 57.99 million, while woolen products slipped by 15.64 percent to Rs 54.12 million in the aforesaid month.
Thanka painting exports experienced a sharp decline of 81.95 percent to Rs 378,382 compared to its export during same period of last year. Similarly, export of handmade paper products dropped to Rs 13.37 million or 42.74 percent, while wood craft export dropped by 48.27 percent to Rs 2.96 million and silk products by 48.96 percent to Rs 9.23 million.
Exports of many other products including bone and horn products, cotton goods, aloe goods, dhaka products, stone craft, leather goods, bead items and bamboo products also saw down fall.
