India will provide an assistance of Rs. 20.4 million to Nepal, in order to establish a Silk Research Centre in Kathmandu, announced government of India. Mr. Rakesh Sood, Indian Ambassador to Nepal laid the foundation stone for institute's new building.

Prior to this, India had provided a Silk Twisting Machine to Nepal in 2006 and a pickup van in 2008. This centre is being established, following the request of Nepal Srijanatmak Kala Guthi, a non- profit NGO.

Guthi, which was established in 1977 on Gandhian principles of equality and social justice, imparts modernized training, in the field of craft, to the unprivileged communities of Nepal in order to make them self-reliant.

The centre, which will be a double storied building, will offer a four years diploma course in Textile and Sericulture started by Kala Guthi in year 2007 and recognized by the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT).
