For more than 30 years, SCAD has transformed historic properties into thriving environments for students, including former hotels, a hospital, a prison, a synagogue, a convent, a department store, a vaudeville stage and more. Of its more than 100 facilities around the world, SCAD has constructed only four. This legacy of sustainability has earned recognition from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the American Institute of Architects and many others.

Since the university's founding in 1978, Wallace has led the adaptive reuse and interior design of every SCAD property. "When students are surrounded by sustainability and thoughtful design on such a macro level, they absorb that ethos," she said. "When they come to SCAD, they see quite vividly how the transformation of one property can launch the rebirth of whole blocks, whole neighborhoods, a whole world."

SCAD's interdisciplinary design for sustainability Master of Arts degree prepares students for implementing sustainable strategies across all design fields. Additionally, courses at SCAD in architecture, fashion, fibers, graphic design, historic preservation, industrial design, interior design, urban design and more feature an innovative curriculum created to prepare students for an economy increasingly reflective of green practices.
