Textile industry leaders in Pakistan are demanding a comprehensive framework to ensure holistic development of the sector, since it was the biggest foreign exchange earner as well as the largest employment provider amongst all sectors in the country.

The, President of Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), Zahid Maqbool said that, textile sector was confronting multiple problems due to electricity and gas shortages and that textile exports have declined from US $10.6 billion in 2007-08 to $9.6 billion in 2008-09, against around $11 billion in 2006-07.

He questioned the very basis of the export target of $25 billion set by the government for the textile industry, since there was acute shortage of electricity and gas. He also advised the government to strive for getting easy access to more international markets for export of textile products.

He also suggested that more textile cities like the Karachi Textile City should be set up in different parts of the country and also a committee should be constituted to monitor the textile sector's performance and give suggestions for resolving its problems.
