The Vietnamese textile and apparel sector needs to adopt new and better technologies if it wants to be, as well as stay competitive in the long term, was the consensus of the participants of a conference which included the French Association of Textile Machinery Manufacturers (UCMTF).

At the conference, the delegates were advised to sign joint venture agreements with foreign firms to benefit from their experience and also take advantage of their advanced technologies, which in turn would also reduce dependence on human labour, as a shortage of skilled labour was already affecting the sector.

Pham Xuan Hong, Deputy Chairman of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (Vitas), said, that despite facing many difficulties due to the economic downturn this year, its exports reached US $7.5 billion in the first 10 months of the year and with demand showing signs of revival, the targets set for the year could be reached.

But despite all this, most raw materials required for apparel manufacture were imported and Vietnamese garment products had little added value, he said and urged companies to find ways to increase the local content rate from the current 36 per cent and also increase their focus on product design.

The visiting French delegation showed their latest technological developments to around 100 Vietnamese companies and according to Evelyne Cholet, Secretary General of the UCMTF, the event offered an opportunity for the two sides to develop long-term business partnerships and expand their business.
