ASSOCHAM to conduct programs on pollution related issues

02
Dec '09
ASSOCHAM will conduct training programs on handling hazardous industrial waste, in the month of December, in association with the Union Environment and Forests (MoEF) as well as Renewable Energy Ministries.

Establishment of a number of industries such as dyes and chemicals, pharmaceuticals and textiles in Gujarat, are generating issues related to effluent treatment and handling of hazardous waste, in the state.

A team of experts from ASSOCHAM will impart training in the programs to be conducted in Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Surat and Vapi, as well as in other places where required, said Mr. DS Rawat, Secretary General, ASSOCHAM.

As per the recent report presented by Assocham on 'Sustaining growth in Gujarat', rapid industrial growth in the state has resulted in degradation and depletion of natural resources, as well as heavy pollution in industrial and urban centres and regional disparities.

The MoEF had asked the Gujarat government in the month of August to ban expansions of the existing industries and setting up of new industries in the industrial estates of Ankleshwar, Panoli and Vapi . The Government of India (GoI) is also becoming strict about pollution related issues.

The Common and Final Effluent Treatment Plants established by the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) in collaboration with the Industrial Associations involving environment consultants are not following norms since the inception of CETPs and FETPs, revealed the data collected by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

However, the industry entrepreneurs said that a new pipeline for the disposal of the effluent is being planned and there is not any hurdle in industry expansion. Industries are also establishing higher capacity effluent treatment plants, along with the government, he added.
