With the deadline nearing for the payment of penalties by the dyeing and processing textiles located in Tirupur, as per a Supreme Court ruling, the Union Textiles Minister assured these units that the state as well as the central govt will step in to help resolve the issue.

According to Mr Dayanidhi Maran, the Tamil Nadu government has assured Rs 1.2 billion assistance and has sent a proposal to the centre seeking a moratorium on repayment as well as a waiver of interest.

The proposal which is now under the consideration of the Union Finance Ministry, offers a 20-year interest free loan for dyers, he added. However, he also urged the exporters in Tirupur to share the burden since it was a common issue affecting the whole sector.

He said, “Since the dyers were the last part of the value chain and if the pollution problem is not solved, it will throttle the entire textile industry, which will make it more difficult to achieve the export targets".
