12,500 metres of stainless steel pipes, 30 tons of steel, 20,000 nuts, bolts and steel plain washers as well as 5,000 square meters of plastic awning featuring air cushioned membrane, complete an unprecedented unique masterpiece of scenic architecture, which reaches along the entire front of the 400 metres long and over 12 metres high roofed airfield, making up a temporary facade on the site of the historical airport of Berlin-Tempelhof.

BREAD & BUTTER has mastered the architectural challenge and with its impressive construction not only makes the runway winter proof, but at the same time binds the modular steel pipe system into the creative staging of the BREAD & BUTTER as a functional “art of construction“.

In collaboration with System 180, a Berlin based enterprise that has specialised in the individual assembly of structural design solutions for architectural projects, within a few months alone an innovative and aesthetically pleasing wall construction was planned, tested and implemented. The modular steel pipe system, which enables superstructures of larger stability and maximum flexibility, was developed as early as the 1980's. System 180 realises several projects at home and abroad, in the areas of museum engineering as well as in the framework of design exhibitions and event productions. Furthermore, it acts as a producer of furniture for home and office, with a varied spectrum ranging from a single shelf to a full furnishing system.

90 % of the needed components for the new construction in the Denim Base are being produced in Berlin and exclusively manufactured for BREAD & BUTTER. The selected materials are extremely robust and durable and can be used for upcoming B&B events time and again.

The aspect of reusability, high functionality and simple elegance were a number one priority during the conception. The plastic awning featuring an air cushioned membrane in a diamond-pattern that covers the steel scaffold, is filled with air over eight units to on the one hand deter rain, snow or the icy January wind, and at the same time to function as a vacuum layer to keep the warm air from the radiant heaters inside the hall. Next to the necessary weather and warmth protection for the exhibitors and visitors in the Denim Base, the impressive structure offers brands such as BOSS Orange, CUSTO Barcelona, Desigual, DIESEL, G-Star RAW, Levi's and Wrangler the possibility of a new dimension of presentation for their collections. Through the up to 150 sqm large entrance portals, which can be individually designed by the brands as a lobby or check-in area, visitors can make their way via a tunnel to the surrounding outside pavilions. These newly developed destinations are up to 700 sqm in size and enable the brands a detailed presentation of their various worlds of experience. Above all, they offer plenty of space to accommodate a high number of visitors even during maximum frequency periods.

Also connected to the construction from the mid outside and reachable via the Denim Base is the “Original Sin Saloon“ – the winter solution for the Luna Park. In the approximately 3,000 sqm large, circular tent, the visitors of the BREAD & BUTTER will find a diverse range of catering over the three days of the event. The “Original Sin Saloon“ will be used for a number of evening events such as the B&B Opening Party.
