Proposal to open two more handloom clusters

The Handloom Department in Tamil Nadu has mulled a proposal to set up clusters in Kanji Koil and Kangayam, under the Integrated Handloom Development Program (IHDP), which will prove to be helpful to improve weaving practices and infrastructure in two areas.

Kanji Koil weavers produce towels and additionally the Department plans to impart them training in mat weaving and also provide value addition training to the weavers in Kangayam to improve designs of sari's woven by them. Subject to approval of the proposal, the government will provide Rs. 6 million to each of the clusters.

The department has already approved handloom clusters in Chennimalai, Thandampalayam, D.G. Pudur and Doddampalayam, wherein it is imparting training to weavers. The department is equipping weavers in Chennimalai to create latest designs in bed spreads and bed sheets.

In Thandampalayam, weavers are receiving assistance from the department to switch over to weaving bed spreads from duster cloth weaving. The department is training around 90 weavers to weave bed-spreads here, while in D.G. Pudur and Doddampalayam clusters, the department is assisting weavers to improve designs of its famous kora cotton saris.

Besides, the department has also set up computer-aided design centres in Chennimalai and D.G. Pudur clusters as part of handloom development project.
