APTMA criticizes bias in gas supply

The Chairman, Standing Committee on Gas, Mr. Shahzad Ali Khan of the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) has criticized the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd (SNGPL) for its mismanaged gas supply to the textile industry, as it caused the industry to face a huge loss of more than Rs 50 billion, and also affected direct employment of around 350,000 workers across Punjab.

While addressing a press conference, Mr. Khan stated that SNGPL is acting in a discriminatory manner by closing gas supply to four regions. Faisalabad is receiving concession in gas supply where the gas was not available only for 16 days, against the other regions facing severe gas unavailability, he added.

Mr. Khan lamented that, since December 21, 2009, the Textile Industry Lahore-I region and Lahore-II region are facing 25-26 days of gas closure while for Multan, Bahawalpur, Gujranwala, Islamabad, Peshawar, Abbotabad regions, gas supply has been blocked for 30-31 days.

SNGPL has failed to keep up the Cabinet Committee's decision, of offering an uninterrupted gas supply to the textile industry for five days in a week, which was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Gas Load Management after negotiating with stakeholders.

Mr. Khan urged the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Resources for transparent and fair execution of the Cabinet Committee's decision.
