The investigation report released by Cotton Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences says that cotton area under cultivation is expected to further reduce in the next cotton season in 2010.
The cotton sowing area in the country will reduce 4.9 percent year on year, from 75.46 million mu (one hectare = 15 Chinese Mu) in 2009 to around 71.76 million mu, due to low incomes and instability in cotton production.
The report says that although the state purchased 2.72 million tons of cotton as state cotton reserves, aiming to solve the difficulties in cotton sales in 2009, it did not solve the problems of farmer's income; price drop of seed cotton was as large as 22.2 percent, causing losses of around 43.1 billion Yuan to farmers.
