Bangladeshi jute industry is witnessing a rise in global interest and creating new opportunities in local markets, which could offer it a new life. There is a need to restructure and reform country's jute sector along with the jute mills operated under the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) to enhance productivity, efficiency and capacity utilization, to seize emerging opportunities, say experts.
This was urged by the participants of a dialogue titled, 'Restructuring of the Jute Manufacturing Sector in Bangladesh: Challenges and Options', co-organized by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) and Economics Discipline, Khulna University, wherein political leaders, private sector entrepreneurs, jute trade union leaders, academics, senior officials of both public and private sector jute mills marked their presence.
As per Dr Khondaker Golam Moazzem, Senior Research Fellow, CPD, there is a need to frame policies in three core areas- strengthening of relevant institutions, undertaking necessary reforms and restructuring of the BJMC, as well as to increase the efficiency of privatization of SOEs related to the jute sector.
It has also been suggested that a number of initiatives need to be implemented over the short and medium term, after comparing the performance of Bangladesh's public and private sector jute mills with those of jute mills operating in India.
