NCC initiates Handicraft Sales Complex

A mechanism to provide a way to handicraft artistes for improving their earnings has been initiated by the National Crafts Council. A Handicraft Sales Complex at the NCC premises, which will be functional on March 1, 2010, will offer opportunities to artisans to sell their products directly to the end users without middlemen's interference.

The Complex at Pelawatta that houses around thirty stalls is supported by the Tourism Ministry. The artisans can sell their products for a week in stalls of the complex, which will remain open round the year wherein the buyers will also have an opportunity to experience the practices of handicraft production.

In a view of handicraft artists' major grievance of the lack of platforms for direct sell of handicraft items to local and foreign buyers, NCC has initiated this sales complex. The artisans are in a pitiable condition as the intermediate businessmen pay meager amounts to the artisans and sell at high rates to buyers.

Accommodation facilities would also be provided to the artisans at the stall, if needed. Around 1,200 artistes have sent applications for the stalls till now, wherein most of the applications have been received from the artisans of the Western Province and Southern Province.
