The 8th Handicraft Trade Fair and 6th craft competition has kicked off at Exhibition Hall, Bhrikuti Mandap in Katmandu, on 18th of February. It has been organized with an objective to improve domestic consumption of handicrafts and promote its export, said Mr. Pushkar Man Shakya, the immediate past President of Federation of Handicraft Association of Nepal (FHAN).

Currently, the country is witnessing a great import-export imbalance, which needs to be balanced to boost national economy. Around 42 types of handicraft items worth Rs.7 billion have been exported from Nepal to 80 countries round the globe, informed Mr. Shakya.

The Prime Minister Mr. Madhav Kumar Nepal expressed his concern over the promotion and preservation of handicraft industry, during the inaugural ceremony of this event. He also guaranteed artisans about immediate identification of land for the establishment of handicraft village.

Moreover, he assured that the pending issues will also be addressed at the earliest and stated that there is need to communicate with the concerned bodies regarding the plans of handicraft sector. Issues such as laboratory development, promotion of handicraft products, incentives and facilities to the sector also need to be addressed, he added.

The Federation of Handicraft Association of Nepal (FHAN) has made considerable investments for handicraft villages, while the government has just given the assurance for this, informed the President, FHAN, Mr. Bikash Ratna Dhakwa. The handicraft industry has to be more scientific, as the issues such as lack of proper infrastructure and heat treatment and fumigation certification in the market affected handicraft sector badly, he added.

Best stall and the best artist of the fair will be honored on the concluding day of fair. About 300,000 visitors are likely to visit the fair, which would generate business of Rs.40 million, anticipated the organizers. This event has been sponsored by Everest De Cargo, the licensee of FedEX Express. An accord has been signed between Everest De Cargo and the Federation of Handicraft Association of Nepal (FHAN), in this regard.

Sponsorship to the fair is a part of Everest De Cargo's efforts towards the promotion of handicraft sector in Nepal, said Mr. Neelish Pradhan, Marketing Director of Everest De Cargo
