Bhagalpur silk's move for GI patent

Bhagalpur silk's crackle must never before have sounded so adorable to its weavers! With its registration process entering the final stage of the global Indications (GI) Act for patenting, the well renowned tussar from Bihar is all set to establish itself as an exclusive brand.

The process for Bhagalpur tussar silk's GI registration is in progress. Though such patenting will not only amplify the silk trade, but will help the weavers in penetrating other markets and reap better prices.

Silk manufacturing which was a booming business in Bhagalpur a few years back has been surpassed by new centers in Bangalore and Ahmedabad.

Once GI status is granted to Bhagalpur tussar silk it will legally forbid others from using the brand name of Bhagalpur silk while selling the silk that is made elsewhere.

Geographical Indication is a trademark attributed to the goods with specific geographical origin, possessing quality, repute or features specifically attributable to that place.

Bhagalpur silk which is also renowned as tussar silk, holds a distinctive place and pride, the world over. Tens of thousands of artisans from within and around Bhagalpur are traditionally fabric weavers. Bhagalpur is also well known as 'silk city'.

Bhagalpur was on the archaic Silk Route. Even today, it supplies its silk to export houses in Kolkata, Delhi and Varanasi which in turn exports it to Middle East, Japan, Europe and US.
