Intertek's Gurgaon leads as India's first Woolmark accredited lab

The Australian Wool Innovation, Ltd. (AWI) has recently accredited Intertek's Gurgaon Textile and Footwear lab to test for quality wool products under its “Woolmark” brand. Intertek, a leading provider of quality and safety solutions to a wide range of industries, aims to utilize the alliance to provide wool producers of India with a reliable local testing facility--helping textile manufacturers to cut costs, facilitate faster regulatory approval, and improve efficient entry into virtually any market in the world.

The Woolmark symbol specifies that a product contains pure new wool, and requires rigorous quality and performance testing for manufacturers seeking to attain the mark. Recognized as the single largest and trusted mark of quality in wool production around the world, the mark is issued by AWI, who is the owner of the marks, on the products which meet the stringent specifications and necessary criteria. “The testing of wool and woolen products requires a different infrastructure and Intertek's Gurgaon lab is found to have that infrastructure,” says a happy SK Chaudhari, Former Country Manager, AWI.

The enhanced certification ability for Intertek's Gurgaon lab will provide both exporters and manufacturers with benefits of local accessibility, and the valuable opportunity to achieve a license for Woolmark and associated brands. Earlier the products had to be shipped to overseas facilities for testing purposes. “Besides the cost involved in sending the products for testing, there is also an issue of time. As lead times shrink it is all the more important to have testing facilities in India,” comments Subhasis Banerjee, Country Manager, India & South East Asia, AWI.

Paul Yao, Executive Vice President for Intertek Group, based in Hong Kong congratulates the Intertek team for continuously expanding the product range that can be tested at the facility. “Intertek's relationship with Woolmark would be a win-win situation for all involved in production of woolen goods,” says Paul.

Dilip Gianchandani, leader of the Gurgaon team and Regional Director of Intertek Consumer Goods India, adds, “The value of the Woolmark brand is established the world over. As consumers increasingly reach for environmentally friendly products, the mark will help our textile customers meet elevated demands with confidence.”
